The Tallawarra B Project
Tallawarra power station is on the traditional Country of the Dharawal peoples. EnergyAustralia respects and acknowledges their continued connection to Country, culture and community.
New South Wales requires fast start gas fired generation to balance the energy system and we have responded with the Tallawarra B project. The project is the development of a fast-start open cycle power station, which in peak periods will deliver reliable power to an additional 150,000 New South Wales homes. Its construction will create 250 jobs.
Located on the shored of Lake Illawarra at EnergyAustralia's existing Tallawarra power station, Tallawarra B will be Australia’s first peaking power station to be powered by a blend of gas and green hydrogen with direct emissions offset. The Tallawarra B project will be ready for the summer of 2023-24, around the time of the scheduled retirement of the Lddell power station.
With its fast-start flexible capacity, the Tallawarra B project will play a vital role in maintaining system security, complementing renewables coming into the system, and providing reliable power to customers in New South Wales.

Tallawarra B - Closure of northern end of Yallah Bay Road
As the construction of Tallawarra B Power Station ramps up to the next phase with an increase of construction activity and necessary delivery items, the project will be shutting the northern portion of Yallah Bay Road as of 13th September from the current gatehouse located approximately 100m north of the boat ramp in a bid to improve safety for all road and cycleway users. A newly constructed link around the cooling channel inlet will allow cycleway users to maintain separation from the project.
Please follow all signage and traffic controls to ensure safe use of the road and cycleway.
Tallawarra B Project – Out of Hours Work (OOHW).
Works to be carried out are:
- Steel fixing
- light vehicle movements
- formwork
- crane movements
- excavations / concreting works
- electrical works
- mechanical works and the use of hand tools across the above dates
Modelling attached to the OOHW permit application indicated that no noise greater than 5db will be generated.
Noise monitoring will be undertaken as recommended by the noise assessment for works that may potentially generate higher noise e.g., crane movements / concreting works during the proposed OOHW time frames to verify the modelled results.
Please Note:
Tallawarra B standard construction hours are defined as Monday – Friday: 7 am – 6 pm, Saturday: 8 am – 1 pm with no work on Sundays or public holidays.
